"ROYAL NAVAL AIR SERVICE, 1912 - 1918"
By Brad King,
Remarkably, there has never been a history dedicated solely to the Royal Navy's airmen in
the First World War. Yet it was these men who pioneered the use of air power at sea, strategic bombing,
anti-submarine warfare - and fast moving armoured warfare on land.! In so doing, they changed naval warfare forever and
laid the foundations for today's carrier borne aviation - the ultimate projection of
global military power. Using much new material from the archives of the Imperial War
Museum, the author traces the development and operations of the man and machines,
from the first uncertain beginnings with airships until the service was unwillingly
absorbed by the newly formed Royal Air Force in April, 1918. The Navy was not to regain full control of its aircraft
and airmen again for another 21 years. Well illustrated with B&W photographs and colour plates.

"BRITISH JEWRY BOOK OF HONOUR, 1914-19"

"BRITISH JEWRY BOOK OF
HONOUR, 1914-19" - BOOK REVIEWS
This can only be described as a monumental work. Put together in the early
1920s, it is a comprehensive record of the part played by Jews in the British
and Dominion armed forces during the Great War, designed in part to show that,
contrary to popular myth of the time, the Jewish community not only contributed
magnificently to the war effort but also made commensurate sacrifices. When it
is realised that over 60,000 Jews served in the armed forces between 1914 and
1918, of whom 2,324 lost their lives and a further 6350 were wounded, the scale
of the effort becomes clear; when it is added that among the totals were five
Victoria Crosses, 50 Distinguished Service Crosses, 242 Military Crosses, 80
Distinguished Conduct Medals, 308 Military Medals and 374 Mention in Despatches,
it may be appreciated that courage was not lacking. As a memorial to the Men
(and Women) involved, this book achieves its purpose.
But such a work is more than just a dry record, for it is books such as this
that are now so useful as research tools. The list of the Jewish dead is
comprehensive to the extent of giving pre-war addresses for nearly all the
fallen, while the lists of Jews who served, divided into individual Regiments of
the British Army and the separate Dominion Contingents, provide service numbers,
ranks and, where known appointments. All this is invaluable when it comes to
checking medal details. Equally important is the material on the "Zion Mule
Corps", raised in Egypt for service in the Dardenelles, and the 38th, 39th,
and 40th (Service) Battalions of the Royal Fusiliers, known collectively as the
"Judeans", the full membership list of which is provided. Finally, the
364 pages of photographs add depth to the book, each being captioned with the
subjects names and unit where known. Also included are photographs of Jewish
memorials, both in the UK and abroad, as they existed in the early 1920s,
together with some shots of Jewish troops in training. All in all, a very
comprehensive coverage that must be unique among World War One Books of Honour.
The reprint has been produced for Selous Books in India, and the quality is
remarkably good, from the blue leather effect covers and gold-leaf page-edges to
the individual pages and photographs. The price may seem high, but what you get
for your money is a substantial and valuable reference book. It also remains
what it was in 1922 - a fitting record of patriotic service in a hard war.
Dr John Pimlott
Head of Military Studies, Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst.
The final book in this series of reprints from Selous Books is particularly
welcome and is a daring project. One of the most highly detailed books on those
who served and died in the Great War is the massive work British Jewry Book
of Honour, 1914 - 1919. Almost completely unobtainable in its original form
- it was first published in 1922 - it has long been of value to genealogists and
medal collectors. There is a Roll of Honour of the dead, records of honours and
awards, citations for MCs, DFCs and DCMs, nominal roll of service by
regiment and a photographic record. All of this is in 1020 pages (364 of them of
photographs). Very well produced in very limited quantity, the photographs have
come out very well, and if you do not have this book and are interested in the
Great War, I suggest that you put in your order quickly.
