This Cross was created on 28 June 1930 and intended for ‘all those who, at peril to their lives, defended the motherland’. Those holding the ‘Carte du Combattant’ had the right to wear the award.

This medal was instituted by Imperial Decree of 11 August 1859 and awarded to the soldiers of the Army of Italy and sailors who participated in the French war against Austria, allied to Sardinia, that was a major step towards the unification of Italy.

MEDAILLE DE SAINTE HELENE
The medal was instituted on 12 August 1857 by Napoleon III to ‘honour with a special distinction the soldiers who fought under the flag of France in the great wars of 1792 to 1815’ and awarded to survivors of the wars of Revolution and Empire some 42 years after their end. It was designed by the great medallist Désiré-Albert Barre and produced by the Imperial Mint.

MEDAILLE DE LA SOMME
The medal was created by the Veterans Association ‘Ceux de la Somme’ to commemorate the part its members played in the battles of the Somme and especially the slaughter of 1916. Only those who could demonstrate their presence in conflict on the Somme in 1914-1918 were admitted to the association. Later, membership was extended to those who opposed the German invasion of 1940 on the Somme. A strikingly-designed medal commemorating key battles of two World Wars.

WAR COMMEMORATIVE MEDAL 1914-1918
The Médaille Commémorative Française 1914-1918 - Awarded to all members of the French Armed Forces who saw service between 2 August 1914 and 11 November 1918. Instituted on 23 June 1920, it could also be conferred on members of the Merchant Navy, medical personnel, local authorities, police of fire brigades of bombed cities etc. Before the Cross for Volunteer Combatants was instituted, a bar "Engagé Volontaire" could be worn on the ribbon.
