Heinrich Muller, head of the Gestapo since 1936 was conspicuous by his absence from the Nuremburg Trials. Born of humble origins in 1898, Muller started his career as a policeman in Munich. Although himself not a dedicated Nazi, he never hesitated to put ambition before personal conviction and by the time that Germany had occupied most of Europe in 1940, he was one of the most powerful men in the Nazi party. Charles Whiting, an acknowledged expert on the Third Reich, is concerned in this intriguing book with what happened to Muller after he was last definitely seen in Hitlers underground bunker in Berlin in April 1945.
