Die Struck Replica

SOUTH AFRICA MEDAL, 1877-79

"1879" CLASP

Introducing a die struck replica of the Campaign Medal awarded for service during the ZULU WAR of 1879. Actions commemorated by this medal include the Defeat at Isandhlwana; the Defence of Rorke's Drift; Eshowe; Kambula; and the final defeat of the Zulus at Ulundi.

The obverse of this Medal showing Queen Victoria's "Young Head" was designed by W Wyon. The reverse, designed by L.C.Wyon, shows a submissive African Lion crouching in front of a Protea bush above crossed Assegai and a Zulu Shield.

Also awarded for service during the Kaffir Wars the original Medals were awarded with the following date clasps:- "1877"; "1877-8"; "1877-9"; "1878"; "1877-8-9"; "1878-9" and "1879". The medal was also awarded without clasps to those who only served in Natal during the Zulu War of 1879.

This replica Medal is die struck in silver plated nickel, has a swivel suspender and clearly marked "Copy" just below the shield.

Some twenty nine VICTORIA CROSSES were awarded during the
Zulu War including the following eleven for the gallant DEFENCE OF RORKE'S DRIFT on 22nd/23rd January, 1879:-
